In the glowing light of candles that warm the night, families gather around the graves of their departed family and friends. Marigolds tied in the shapes of crosses are seen on the graves along with baskets fruit, bread baked especially for this night, and burning incense. The people return to the cemeteries year after year to await the arrival of their loved ones just as their ancestors have since pre-Colombian times.

The Day of the Dead is a national holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, but customs differ with each cultural group and region. We have chosen the Patzcuaro area, where the Purepecha Indians abound, as the place we wish to observe, participate in and live a part of this tradition. The markets come alive with a festive atmosphere; local artisans sell sugar skulls, candiies, ceramic and even marzipan “day of the dead” figures. Reverence for the departed is expressed though the gathering together and remembrance by the living. It’s a time to celebrate life and to defy the fear of death itself.

Following a trail of marigold petals and candles, the dead return to partake in the earthly indulgences they so loved. Favorite foods, a glass of tequila, a cigar, whatever they loved, are all left out for them to enjoy. There is often music and revelry to make the spirits happy upon their return.
